چکیده

Thermoelastic expansion due to frictional heating causes significant changes in contact pressure and temperature in energy dissipation systems uch as brakes and clutches. Finite element analysis of such systems tends to be extremely computer-intensive. We here present an alternative mplementation of the transient problem, based on the expression of the temperature and stress fields as modal expansions. For its implementation, he method depends upon the availability of solutions of the eigenvalue problem related to thermoelastic instability (TEI). It is demonstrated hat computational efficiencies can be achieved by performing the eigenvalue analysis at a limited number of speeds and then using a suitable nterpolation procedure. However, care must be taken in the interpolation process, because eigenvalues of the problem tend to be clustered, which omplicates the process of identifying corresponding eigenfunction pairs. The method is validated by convergence tests and illustrated by an xample of a multidisc clutch. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Rapidly Convergent Nonlinear Transfinite Element Procedure for Transient Thermoelastic Analysis of Temperature-Dependent Functionally Graded Cylinders

In the present paper, the nonlinear transfinite element procedure recently published by the author is improved by introducing an enhanced convergence criterion to significantly reduce the computational run-times. It is known that transformation techniques have been developed mainly for linear systems, only. Due to using a huge number of time steps, employing the conventional time integration me...

Transient Behaviour and Stability for the Thermoelastic Contact of Two Rods of Dissimilar Materials

-The paper investigates the transient behaviour and stability of a system consisting of two thermally conducting elastic rods in contact on their end faces, the other ends of the rods being built-in to two rigid walls which are maintained at different temperatures. It is assumed that there is a thermal resistance at the interface between the rods which is a known function of contact pressure or...

An Axisymmetric Contact Problem of a Thermoelastic Layer on a Rigid Circular Base

We study the thermoelastic deformation of an elastic layer. The upper surface of the medium is subjected to a uniform thermal field along a circular area while the layer is resting on a rigid smooth circular base. The doubly mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a pair of systems of dual integral equations. The both system of the heat conduction and the mechanical problems are calculated b...

Quasi-Static Transient Thermal Stresses in an Elliptical Plate due to Sectional Heat Supply on the Curved Surfaces over the Upper Face

This paper is an attempt to determine quasi-static thermal stresses in a thin elliptical plate which is subjected to transient temperature on the top face with zero temperature on the lower face and the homogeneous boundary condition of the third kind on the fixed elliptical curved surface. The solution to conductivity equation is elucidated by employing a classical method. The solution of stre...

Transient thermoelastic analysis of FGM rotating thick cylindrical pressure vessels under arbitrary boundary and initial conditions

Assuming arbitrary boundary and initial conditions, a transient thermo-elastic analysis of a rotating thick cylindrical pressure vessel made of functionally graded material (FGM) subjected to axisymmetric mechanical and transient thermal loads is presented. Time-dependent thermal and mechanical boundary conditions are assumed to act on the boundaries of the vessel. Material properties of the ve...
